Working in rural Laos
Vientiane, as a capital city, is unlikely to be representative of this ethnically and geographically diverse country. LOMWRU therefore studies the causes of fever at rural sites outside the capital. We support an infectious disease diagnosis service, with the flying and busing of samples to Vientiane from Luang Nam Tha Provincial Hospital, in north west Laos, Salavan Provincial Hospital in southern Laos and Xieng Khouang Provincial Hospital in the northeast.
LOMWRU examines the causes of fever, particularly rickettsial diseases, dengue, typhoid, leptospirosis and Japanese encephalitis infections. This work will give evidence for estimating the disease burden in rural Laos, where most of the population live, and inform interventions, diagnostic, preventative and curative.
