In 2009, the Tak Province Community Ethics Advisory Board (T-CAB) was set up on the Thai-Myanmar border to guide the research activities undertaken by SMRU and get a better knowledge of the community’s understanding of research. This location is a convergence of many displaced ethnic minorities and has been the site of several important research activities, such as those leading to artemisinin-based combination therapies becoming the treatment of choice for malaria globally.

With proper support and training, the T-CAB dialogue format can move beyond a simple ‘must-do’ activity and be developed to challenge researchers, facilitate a community-led research agenda and provide mutual benefit. This is being pursued and supported through on-going facilitation of this Board as well as involving them in further ethics studies.
