Ispat General Hospital, Rourkela, Odisha
Rourkela in the eastern state Odisha is a provincial town dominated by a large steel plant, which provides many services to the community. Ispat General Hospital is the steel plant 285-beds hospital, including an 11-bed intensive care unit. Severe falciparum malaria is an important cause of mortality and morbidity. The hospital has a long reputation in research on tropical diseases, mainly malaria. MORU has the privilege to collaborate with them since 2002, when the centre participated in SEAQUAMAT, a large multicentre, multinational, trial comparing parenteral artesunate and quinine in the treatment of severe malaria, which showed a huge survival benefit in favour of artesunate. Since this successful trial, the collaboration has continued in studies on the pathophysiology and treatment of severe malaria. Moreover, MORU participates in regional courses on the treatment of severe malaria and intensive care medicine.
