Antimalarial Drug Development

Sample processing

Jointly with the Mahidol Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Nick White and Prof. Sasithon Pukrittayakamee lead a dedicated MORU unit for Phase I and II studies on the development of new antimalarial drugs. The development of new antimalarial compounds has become even more urgent with the current antimalarial resistance problems. In collaboration with partners, the Malaria Department in Bangkok is closely involved in the development of several lead compounds. Dr Podjanee Jitmala and Dr Borimas Hanboonkunupakarn coordinate many of the early phase testing in healthy volunteers, including the description of the pharmacokinetic properties and side effects of the new drugs. This is essential before drugs can be tested in patients, which is also an important research field.
